What is Halvah (Halva)?

What is Halvah (Halva)?

What is Halvah (and what is Holy Halvah!)

Halvah (also spelled halva) is a rich, dense, and sweet confection that has been cherished for centuries across the Middle East, Mediterranean, and parts of Asia. Traditionally made with sesame tahini and sweetened with honey or sugar, this sesame sweet is a staple in many cultures. Many of us Americans grew up getting a dry sandy version in bulk at health food stores and ethnic groceries.

Halvah has a deep nutty flavor, and is made by blending tahini (sesame paste) with a sweetener and often incorporating nuts or spices. The result is a layered, slightly crumbly treat that can be sliced like fudge.

A Vegan, Gluten-Free, and Dairy-Free Dessert

Halva is free from dairy and gluten, packed with plant-based protein, healthy fats, and essential minerals from sesame seeds.
